Transportation is the facility, which serves for the movement of man and material from one point to another point.
Highway engineering is the application of technology and scientific principles to the planning functional design, operation and management of various facilities involving in highway.
Different modes of transportation.
a) Roadways or highways: The transportation by road is the only mode which gives maximum service to one and all. It is possible to provide door to door service by using road transport. Road transport is such a mode of transport which is required for other modes of transport like railways, airways and water ways.
b) Railways: Railways transport is limited only form one station to another station. It cannot serve for door to door service. It is most important transport facility for long distance travel. The cost of charges of travel and good transport is generally low. Railways in Nepal are now in operation in janakpur to jayanagar railway. But at present east-west railways is under construction.
c) Waterways: water transportation is the most effective mode to transportation. Large quantities of cargo over long distance are transport. The operating cost and transport charge are also very low as compared to other modes of transport. In Nepal, the waterways are not in used in huge scale.
d) Airways: The transportation by air is the fastest among all four modes. It saves time for passenger and the goods between the terminals. The cost of this mode is highest among other modes. In Nepal, Nepal Airlines Corporation has taking responsibility of air transport.
